Skyscanner: Skyscanner. Changed. The. Game. It’s never been easier to find the best rates for flights across every airline. My favorite feature is the choice to search flights to “everywhere” in the world from your departure city – perfect for the modern adventurer with no plan in sight! And if you do in fact need help deciding, the search engine also features tools to help you narrow down your search. You can also adapt your currency (very helpful when I booked my last-minute trip from London to Amsterdam) to get a more accurate price idea. Whether you’re simply browsing the web daydreaming about your next feat or finalizing your trip itinerary, let Skyscanner do the planning for you!
XE Currency: I never ever travel internationally without XE Currency, frankly because my math sucks. Quickly convert currencies right on your phone – no calculating necessary! You can also monitor up to 10 of your choice currencies and get notifications on your favorite ones. No wifi? No problem. It works with or without data – a deal breaker for the globetrotter on the go.
Speak & Translate: Talk about a game changer for tech and travel! All you have to do is speak into your phone and this app will do all the work for you – and by “all” I mean, voice-to-voice translation, text translation, and it will even detect the language for you!
Side note: I took 12 years of Spanish in school, including 2 years of AP classes, and still wouldn’t be able to get by in Mexico without Speak & Translate!
Google Maps: There are two types of people in the world: Google Map people and Apple Map people. I’ve been involved in some heated debates about it and up until about a year ago, I was the latter. Google Maps gives you route options for driving, public transportation, walking, biking, and even Uber and Lyft requests. What makes it so grate for travel is the ability to save your route for when you’re offline. I’ve used it both domestically when I’d be going in and out of range and internationally when I knew I wouldn’t have service. Save yourself the debate with those annoying Google loyalists and just download it already.

Hostelworld/HotelTonight/Airbnb: Now you’ve got options for every travel experience, and these are my go-tos for booking accommodation at any level. Read reviews, swipe through photos, and book through all of the apps listed. Hostelworld is a great resource for last-minute and future planning on beds or private rooms all over the world. HotelTonight offers amazing deals on last-minute bookings – I booked and checked in within 30 minutes! Earn perks like extra-discounted rates and exclusive offers each time you book. With Airbnb, you really do live like a local (at least while you’re visiting!) and I love that you can save your favorite listings into folders.
Hotel Tonight: KBAXTER42 for $25 when you sign up
Airbnb: KIKIB6 for $40 when you sign up
Duolingo: A fun, easy way to learn a new language or refresh what you already know! Download before your trip to pick up some new vocab words and phrases.
Tinder (or your favorite dating app): Okay, so I’ve only ever met someone in person once, but I think it’s a great resource to connect with like-minded locals and find out what’s fun to do in the area!
